Boom Chicago: Since 1993, Boom Chicago has mixed sharp writing and quick-thinking improvisation to create funny shows and videos. Boom Chicago performs nightly in Amsterdam and from their production studios they create video content for broadcast, broadband and
mobile.

Boom Chicago’s famous multimedia improvisation show live at the 300-seat Leidseplein Theatre. The audience is seated at long tables and participates in the show by giving suggestions – similar to the TV show Whose Line Is It Anyway?

Acts: Boom has an ensemble cast whose actors are hired for around 2 years
Atmosphere: Booming! (Sorry) Good fluid production, great for first timers.

Giggling Guiri: The GG is Spain’s premier international English language comedy club and has been the pioneered live English language comedy in Spain since 2004. Located in the heart of Barcelona’s most colourful barrio, this venue is full of character. It is a classic cabaret-style theatre with a wonderful intimate feel providing a great way to experience top comedians up close and personal. At the end of the evening DJs will take the club on into the early hours (and there’s a full bar too).

Cote d’Azur Comedy Clubs

The Laughing Horse Comedy Tour: The second weekend of the month is comedy weekend on the Cote d’Azur. Following a hugely successful tour in June 2003, The Laughing Horse runs an annual tour taking professional stand-up comedy to the tourist destination. The
line-up is taken directly from the London circuit and the tour is mostly attended by the English speaking ex-pat and yachting communities on the coast.

Each show consists of 3 acts and one MC filling a 2 hour slot.

Price:            EUR 17 – EUR 15
Acts:            Much like the Laughing Horse’s London nights this is a real mixed bag.
Atmosphere: Exactly what you would expect from the ex-pat and yachting communities…

Madrid Comedy Clubs

Giggling Guiri: The GG is Spain’s premier international English language comedy club and has pioneered live English-language comedy in Spain since 2004. The theatre is a beautiful space with an intimate capacity of 250 and located just 2 minutes walk from Madrid’s Gran Via.

My advice to you is to enjoy an early meal in one of the many great restaurants nearby and finish the night off with some fantastic comedy and some great drinks!

Price: EUR 17 – EUR 15
Acts: Friday night is comedy night and the GG can draw big names.
Atmosphere: Ex-pat community

The Stand: The Stand Comedy Club celebrated its 12^th anniversary in September 2007. From tiny beginnings the club has grown steadily. What started as a voluntary organisation run by enthusiasts has now become a successful business.

In Edinburgh the club is now housed in the city centre – the venue was converted out of an insurance company’s old archive store - and is open seven nights week, every week of the year. Personally I have always been a bigger fan of the other festival venues – and the seating is not the most comfortable – but this popular, venerable spot is always worth checking out.

Price:            £2 - £12
Acts:            Over the years it has truly been a story of the great and the not-so-good!
Atmosphere: Small, close-knit environment allows for a good atmosphere.

Brighton Comedy Clubs

Komedia: Komedia started in 1994, converting a Grade II-listed former billiard hall in Brighton’s Kemp Town area into a theatre and cabaret bar, and presenting a programme of trademark variety. Komedia promoted the burgeoning talents of many young performers including Graham Norton, Mel & Sue, Johnny Vegas, Al Murray, Jenny Éclair, Alistair McGowan, Omid Djalili, Rhona Cameron and The League Of Gentlemen.

The tiny venue proved so popular, the company was forced to expand and in 1998 Komedia moved into a former Tesco supermarket in Gardner Street and began to establish itself as the premier live performance venue in the South.

Price:            £10
Acts:           A variety of shows ranging from top stand-up to vaudeville theatre.
Atmosphere: Typical Brighton party crowd – good laugh

Jongleurs: Ah, the Starbucks of comedy clubs! Jongleurs lacks the focused intensity of more
straightforward clubs; expect stag nights, hen nights and corporate dos in this altogether less discerning audience. Comedy is a performance art and demands full concentration. The environment should feature bright lights, body heat, and an intense atmosphere; it shouldn’t come with dinner tables not facing the stage (allowing, people to chat among themselves during the act), and a post-show disco.

Don’t get me wrong, Jongleurs does attract some great comedians and as a place to go for an occasional laugh, it’s fine. But if I am being honest it is not for me.

You can use this review as a guide for all Jongleurs - because much like Starbucks, they stay very much the same.

Price: £8 - £10 - better than the London prices but still a bit steep.
Acts: Usually 4-5 acts will do a set per night and if you are lucky you may have heard of two of them – if you are lucky!
Atmosphere: Corporate events, work parties and stag and hen nights are the norm.

Dublin Comedy Clubs

The Comedy Cellar: The Comedy Cellar started out life as a night where Ardal O’Hanlon (Father Ted) and a few friends would try out new sketch routines and gags on the punters. It ended up turning into quite a draw and they re-named the night the Comedy Cellar (Irish irony
for a comedy club hosted on the first floor?).

The Cellar is now the home of Dublin’s emerging comic talent and has been for the last two decades.

Price: EUR 10
Acts: One of Dublin’s oldest and finest
Atmosphere: Up for the craic!

Capital Comedy Club: The Ha’Penny Bridge Inn has over the years played host to some of the biggest names in Irish entertainment. It first began hosting regular comedy in 1996 and has hosted all the top names in Irish comedy such as Perrier Award winner Tommy Tiernan, Des Bishop, Jason Byrne, PJ Gallagher and Dermot Morgan. Sadly the likes of these are no longer regularly found on the bill.

Comedy every Wednesday took off there in 2000 and then in January 2005 the Capital Comedy Club was founded on Wednesday nights (adding to the already established Sunday nights).

Price: EUR 7
Acts: A collection of solid Irish talent, but rarely the high rollers.
Atmosphere: This is one of those venues that is completely reliant on the crowd.

Manchester Comedy Clubs

The Comedy Store: Situated in Manchester’s fashionable Deansgate Locks development, Manchester’s long-awaited version of The Comedy Store threw open its doors on 14 September 2000 and has never looked back.

The Manchester Store is the only venue of its type in the country, with a 500 seater theatre-style auditorium, spacious public bar, dining area and VIP room occupying two converted railway arches in the £14m development.

The Manchester venue is continuing the tradition established by the original London venue of staging top-quality shows featuring the best names in the business at the same time as showcasing new talent.

Price:            £8 - £16
Acts:            The best in the business regularly grace this stage and even the unknowns have had to impress a few very important people to gain their 5-minute trial.
Atmosphere: Great, custom-built set up and venue, a top night out.
